DDR5 RAM Upgrade in 2026 — Do You Really Need It?
DDR5 is now standard on new laptops. Here's when the upgrade is worth the money and when DDR4 is still fine.
By mid-2026 almost every mainstream laptop ships with DDR5 memory. But if your existing laptop uses DDR4, is it worth upgrading to a new DDR5 machine — or just adding more DDR4?
Speed reality. DDR5-5600 is roughly 40% faster than DDR4-3200 in synthetic tests, but only 6–12% faster in real-world browsing, Office and light Photoshop. Gaming laptops with integrated graphics benefit most (up to 25% higher FPS on iGPU).
Compatibility. DDR4 and DDR5 slots are physically different — you cannot mix them. If your motherboard is DDR4, you are staying on DDR4. Bring it in and we'll confirm.
