Technical Glossary

Computer & laptop repair terms, explained

This glossary defines the 24 terms our engineers use most often when quoting a repair — from BGA reballing and thermal throttling to NVMe, S.M.A.R.T. attributes and FortiGate IPsec VPNs. Every definition reflects how the term is actually applied on the bench at HOPE Systems in Ahmedabad.

Hardware

What is BGA Reballing?
Removing a ball-grid-array chip (GPU, chipset or CPU) from a laptop motherboard, cleaning the pads and reattaching it with fresh solder balls at a controlled reflow profile. It fixes no-display and intermittent-boot faults caused by cracked solder joints.
What is Chip-Level Repair?
Board-level diagnosis and component replacement — MOSFETs, charging ICs, EC chips, capacitors — instead of swapping the whole motherboard. It typically costs 40–70% less than a board replacement.
What is DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM?
DDR4 runs at 1.2 V with 2133–3200 MT/s; DDR5 runs at 1.1 V with 4800–8000 MT/s and on-module ECC. They are physically and electrically incompatible, so a DDR4 laptop cannot be upgraded to DDR5 modules.
What is Thermal Throttling?
The CPU or GPU lowering its clock speed once it hits its thermal limit (usually 95–100 °C) to avoid damage. It shows up as sudden frame drops or lag and is normally fixed by repasting and cleaning the heatsink.
What is Power Rail?
A regulated voltage line on a motherboard (3.3 V, 5 V, 19 V, VCORE). A shorted rail is the most common cause of a dead laptop that shows no charging light.

Storage & Data

What is NVMe SSD?
A solid-state drive that talks to the CPU over PCIe using the NVMe protocol, reaching 3,500–7,000 MB/s versus roughly 550 MB/s for SATA SSDs. It requires an M.2 slot with PCIe lanes wired to it.
What is S.M.A.R.T. Attributes?
Self-reported drive health counters such as reallocated sectors, pending sectors and media wear-out. Rising reallocated-sector counts mean a drive should be cloned immediately.
What is Logical vs Physical Data Recovery?
Logical recovery rebuilds deleted or corrupted file systems on a working drive using software imaging. Physical recovery repairs or transplants failed heads, PCBs or NAND in a clean-room environment and costs substantially more.
What is Disk Imaging?
Creating a sector-by-sector clone of a failing drive before any repair attempt, so all recovery work happens on the copy and the original media is never further stressed.
What is TRIM?
An SSD command that tells the controller which blocks are no longer in use so they can be erased in advance. It keeps write speeds high but also makes deleted-file recovery from SSDs largely impossible.

Software & OS

What is Boot Loop?
A machine that restarts repeatedly before reaching the desktop, usually caused by a corrupt update, failing storage, bad RAM or a damaged EFI boot partition.
What is BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)?
A Windows stop error that names the failing driver or subsystem — for example MEMORY_MANAGEMENT for bad RAM or CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED for a corrupt system file. The stop code determines whether the fault is hardware or software.
What is UEFI / Secure Boot?
The modern firmware interface that replaced BIOS. Secure Boot only loads cryptographically signed bootloaders; a broken signature chain produces the common 'no bootable device' message.
What is Windows Repair Install?
Reinstalling Windows over itself while keeping files, apps and settings. It repairs system-file corruption without the data loss of a clean format.
What is Driver Rollback?
Reverting a device driver to its previous version. It is the first fix for crashes, black screens or Wi-Fi drops that begin right after an automatic update.

Networking

What is FortiGate IPsec VPN?
A site-to-site or dial-up encrypted tunnel configured on a Fortinet FortiGate firewall, using IKE phase-1 and phase-2 proposals to connect branch offices or remote staff to an office LAN.
What is VLAN?
A logically separated network segment on shared switch hardware, used to keep guest Wi-Fi, CCTV and accounting systems isolated from one another on a single office LAN.
What is PoE (Power over Ethernet)?
Delivering both data and electrical power over one Ethernet cable, commonly used for access points, IP cameras and desk phones so they need no separate adapter.
What is Packet Loss?
Data packets failing to reach their destination, seen as choppy video calls or intermittent drops. It is diagnosed with sustained ping and traceroute tests rather than a speed test.

Service

What is No Fix, No Charge?
HOPE Systems' policy that you pay nothing — not even diagnostic time — if a device cannot be repaired. Free doorstep pickup and drop are included regardless of the outcome.
What is Turnaround Time (TAT)?
The time from device intake to handover. HOPE Systems averages the same day for software, screen, battery, RAM and SSD jobs, and 2–4 working days for chip-level board repair.
What is AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract)?
A yearly agreement covering scheduled preventive servicing, priority response and labour for a fleet of computers, typically priced per device for offices and clinics.
What is Refurbished Grade A?
A pre-owned machine that has been fully tested, deep-cleaned, given a new battery where required, and reissued with warranty; cosmetic wear is minimal and all functions are verified.
What is 90-Day Service Warranty?
HOPE Systems' guarantee covering the workmanship on every repair for 90 days, with genuine replacement parts separately covered for six months.
